Description:
Merely the 2nd solo record for the onetime Del Fuego Warren Zanes, People That I`m Wrong For may not necessarily be the chronicle for every mismatched relation suggested by its title. However it may be a key footnote in understanding his off center perspective, along with his inclination toward the kind of somber feelings common to the disappointed. It`s a little more evident here than on his fabulous solo debut, Memory Girls, but no less effecting as this well crafted, 11-track effort absorbs you like dry sponge. Zanes has a terrific sense for dreamy baroque-style pop that sounds like a fusion of The Beatles, World Party and Oasis. It`s a warm and fuzzy dose of audio tranquility that cradles his toasty, organic vocal - one that seems so lacking in attitude you can`t help but be on his side. There an underlying sense of wonder and magic here, too, that uplifts despite its downbeat nature. Hints of Memphis soul creep in through some horn phrasings here and there; most noticeable in the lead-off track "Jr`s Bag Of Tricks" and the lazy "Mating Call". This well-worth-the-wait effort was produced by Daniel Tashian, responsible for Zanes` previous record - and engineered by Brad Jones. The two, along with drummer Brian Owing (Will & The Bushmen, Buddy Miller, Pieta Brown) key man Gabe Dixon (Paul McCartney, Maura O`Connell), also handle much of the guitar, bass and backing vocals, which are in glorious abundance. -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (Dualtone)
