Produced by Eliot Houser at Studio E in East Nashville, TN, the sound and content of Marry A Waitress is a bit edgier than previous Ned Van Go releases; you might call it a working class record. As with previous releases In Stereo and Rain, Trains & The Lord Almighty, there is some humor and melancholy here, but also a glimpse into such southern characters as the working waitress, the career factory worker and the ever lingering, sometimes sweet faced, southern racist. NVG also for the first time include two great songs by outside writers on this release: "Never Kissed a Girl" by the Carbondale, Illinois band Woodbox Gang and "No Sleeping In Penn Station" by the late great Kentucky band Government Cheese. Along with the group`s five man crew, there are guest appearances from Donnie Herron (fiddle), Mark Miller (standup bass), Michael Webb (accordion), and Kris McCarthy (backing vocal), helping fill out the sound. How does one label this? Roots-rock? Folk-rock? Twang-pop? Marry A Waitress offers all of those things. (self-released)
