Memphis troubadour Cory Branan has turned out one hell of a debut disc. Originally released in 2001, Branan retooled the record by dropping three tracks and adding two. His love songs, like "Tame", are vividly imaged and his story-songs, such as "Whiskey Grove", are sharply written, emotionally resonate tales. Branan`s warm, yet slightly worn vocals add a lived-in quality to these terrific tunes. While favoring stripped down arrangements, he turns to a loose, rootsy rock band sound on numbers like "Jolene" and "Miss Ferguson".
