It`s curious and fun that the first track on Corin Ashley`s fab little disc, Songs From The Brill Bedroom, sounds more like The Rutles and less like their parody namesake. And when it comes to describing his husky voice, he`s more in league with any or all of the singing members of Badfinger. Not unexpected, though, from the singer of ultra poppy rockers The Pills. Ashley writes like he knows there has to be a classic song in his acoustic guitar, and he can make `em tender or tough. The tune "For Roy Orbison" sounds as you would expect it (or at least how Pete Ham might approach it) and a beautiful ukulele rendition of Harry Nilsson`s "Daddy`s Song" closes the set. But if you are going to wear your influences on your sleeve you`d better have a good enough song to make us overlook that point. And by Crikey he`s done it! -- Robinson, Miles Of Music (MHR)
