Description:
At just over 40 minutes, Starless & Bible Black Sabbath might technically seem like a short album, but the majestic, mind-bending soundscapes therein are virtually infinite. Those familiar with Japanese psychedelic art-noise collective Acid Mothers Temple (and the side projects of its leader Mokoto Kawabata) should expect nothing less. The title track clocks in at 34:28, and pays homage to the namechecked pioneers of doom rock with its monstrous, droney riffs, which are then offset by the swirling, often beautiful atmospherics of the rest of the ensemble. The second cut, "Woman From A Hell," is a mere 6:14, but sounds like an outtake from the Nuggets box set with its jacked-up, jackhammer guitars, phased vocals, and acid-rock accents. As usual, the Temple fuses heavy-metal madness, krautrock pulses, free jamming, and outer space sonics to thrilling, freaky effect. (Alien8 Recordings)
