Heather Waters possesses an extraordinarily expressive voice and the ability to wrap it around phrases. In the last decade of alt.country/roots music Neko Case has been, arguably, the reigning vocal champ. Waters, if not Case`s superior is absolutely her equal. Without hesitation, this record is gorgeous. Waters wrote or co-wrote the majority of the tracks on Propeller, sliding in a Tom Waits cover alongside her thought-provoking originals. The liner notes thank her family for steering her towards a career in music instead of law. If Waters could have sang her briefs that would have been a heckuva court room.
